Best Workplaces

The sector at a glance

The workplaces cluster covers employer brand, workplace culture and people operations — and the award ecosystem employers compete through to prove it. Two survey administrators sit underneath most of the recognition in this field: Great Place To Work, whose Trust Index survey and Culture Audit feed the Fortune Best Companies to Work For list and the Certified badge, and Energage, whose engagement survey powers Top Workplaces programs for regional newspapers including the Austin American-Statesman. Best Companies Group administers many of the regional and industry 'Best Places to Work' programs run with media partners. Around them sit employee-review marketplaces (Glassdoor, Comparably, Built In, Indeed), editorial rankings (Forbes, Inc., LinkedIn Top Companies) and the people-operations software that generates the underlying data (Culture Amp, Lattice, 15Five, Qualtrics, Viva Glint, Workday). Buyers are HR and people leaders, talent-acquisition heads, internal communications and founders — all working on the same problem: turning what is actually true about a workplace into something a candidate can verify. Austin is the anchor market, where the Austin Business Journal Best Places to Work list and the Statesman's Austin Top Workplaces award are the two programs local employers organize their year around.
